Here are a few career options after BDS to fulfill your desire of achieving heights.
1.DO MDS-MOST TRADITIONAL OPTION
The first career option after BDS is to prepare for NEET exams and to do a three years course of MDS. Focus hard on preparing for exams and try to get a PG seat in a government college. There are many private colleges too that offer MDS courses in all branches of dentistry. MDS gives you a maturing curve and makes you a specialist in that branch. If you want to be that dentist who can even treat complicated cases with ease then you are about to fulfill your wish. Before opening a dental clinic, you should work in a private clinic or a hospital for at least 1 or 2 years to gain the practical knowledge and experience of running a dental clinic. It is also good if you can do some hands-on courses like rotary endo course, implant course, cosmetic dentistry course before opening the clinic.
Always survey for the location, prices prevalent in nearby clinics, and the competition before opening a dental clinic. Work sincerely and be proactive in the promotion of your clinic and you can earn a handsome income. By the time your batch mate clears MDS, you will be a multi-specialist in 3 years. After a few years, you can turn your clinic into polyclinic or group practice as well. This is one of the best and most conventional career options after BDS as you are your own boss here.
3. JOIN GOVERNMENT JOB- TRY YOUR LUCK
You can apply for government jobs offered by state governments. It gives you a chance to get a handsome salary as well as job security and insurance for life long. All multi-specialty hospitals have a dental department and you can apply there too. You can get a job in the Indian army, navy, railways, or in state government jobs. But it is not easy to get a government job, so don’t be dependent.
4. JOIN ARMY DENTAL CORPS
You can join the Army dental corps and can work as a dental surgeon in a military hospital. It has both short commission and long commission jobs. Moreover, it also gives you an opportunity to do MDS through the army after joining the long commission. It serves the dual purpose of serving the country as well as fulfilling the passion of dentistry. You are an officer here and no work carries more pride and honor than working for Indian Armed Forces.

A Diploma in Hospital Administration, Hospital Management or Health Management services, or any other such course will open a gateway for you if you want to practice in Canada or any other country.
6. DO MPH-MASTERS IN PUBLIC HEALTH
Do you hate being in this field, then you can change it by doing post-graduation in MPH. You will stay connected to dentistry, yet not have worked as a clinician. Nowadays there are many jobs in public health especially after covid times both in government as well as the private sector. You can completely turn towards public health and work as an epidemiologist, researcher, etc. You can merge the two qualifications beautifully and can work with NGOs concerned with oral hygiene, smile, oral diseases, etc. The main attraction of doing MPH is the availability of many career options in foreign countries. MPH in India or DPH in the US are good options. If you don’t like clinical dentistry, then MPH looks worth a shot.

There are different rules and exams for various countries like the USA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, etc. but it is worth doing all this labor as you earn much more in a foreign country than in India. It seems very tempting but it is a very costly and difficult option. I am not demotivating the young aspirants, if you are able to clear the exams and can afford high fees then you must go as life is super easy and cool after that.
