A denture is a removable appliance that is used as a replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Dentures are of two types- complete and partial. A complete denture is used when all of the teeth are missing while a partial denture is used when some teeth are missing.
A complete denture can either be immediate or conventional. A conventional denture is made when the gum tissues heal after the extraction of all teeth. It is usually given after 8 to 12 weeks of the healing phase after extraction.
A complete denture replaces all the teeth in an arch, thus some patients may have only an upper denture or lower denture or some have both upper and lower complete dentures.
ADVANTAGES OF COMPLETE DENTURE
- Esthetically pleasing
- Treatment time is shortest from start to end
- Cost-effective- less costly treatment for replacing all teeth.
DISADVANTAGES OF COMPLETE DENTURE
- Lower dentures are less stable as compared to upper dentures because of various muscles and tongue which dislodge the denture.
- Upper dentures cover the entire roof of the mouth, so a person can feel them bulky.
- Some patients have less denture retention due to the anatomy of their jaws. There are other options to help such patients get stable dentures.
- The anatomy of a patient’s jaw changes with time and the denture becomes unstable in that case and it needs relining occasionally to improve the stability of the denture.
TYPES OF COMPLETE DENTURE
Conventional dentures
In conventional dentures, all the teeth are extracted at least 8 weeks before the denture fabrication. This allows the tissues to heal at this time after extraction so that the denture will fit accurately. Complete dentures fabricated in this way are very accurate. A patient has to remain without teeth for a long time so here comes the need for an immediate denture. Many patients do not want to remain without teeth for a single day, then the immediate denture is fabricated. One should take proper care of dentures, read more
Immediate dentures
In this type of denture, all the teeth behind the canine are extracted and the tissues are allowed to heal for 8 weeks. Thus the patient can still smile during this healing phase as front teeth are present. Then the denture is fabricated. When it is done the front teeth are extracted and a denture is delivered on the same day. This means the patient is never without front teeth.
An immediate denture may need a few visits for adjustments and it may take some time to get used to your immediate denture. Relining or rebasing of denture is needed within 3 to 6 months as the gums will shrink during the healing phase.
Over-dentures
Over-dentures are made either by utilizing the existing teeth or dental implants to rest a denture that enhances retention and stability.
PARTIAL DENTURES
Partial dentures are dentures that replace one or more missing teeth. Partial dentures consist of a denture base that resembles the color of your gums and denture teeth. The partial denture then attaches to the existing teeth with the help of a clasp or any other retentive part. It can be taken in and out of the mouth easily. A partial denture not only replaces the missing teeth but also prevents the remaining teeth to shift their position.
